Hi, I’m Samantha – wife, mom of two, Canadian. I’m a bunch of other things too – I fancy myself a decent cook, a photographer, and a pretty handy/crafty chick. I’m also a doula, so from time to time I may share some of my passion around pregnancy, birth and babies.
For a little bit of backstory on how I got where I am, I’ll start by saying that I grew up in a family where the kitchen was the heart of the home, and being able to make and do things yourself was more important than having the money to pay someone else to do it. As a little girl, I spent a lot of time in my grandmother’s kitchen, painting and drawing and creating, and also learning some of the finer points of cooking and baking. I was enrolled in my first preschool cooking class at the early age of three! I am by no means a trained chef or baker, but my passion for food has continued through to my adult life, and I am lucky enough to have a husband and children with adventurous palates, who willingly eat my creations and don’t mind my ridiculous assortment of ingredients. As I entered adulthood, I also began to feel a greater appreciation for the other things my grandmother did, the quilting, the sewing, the crocheting. Neither my mom nor any of her siblings seemed to inherit this crafty DIY gene, but I seem to have more than enough to compensate. It has become one of my goals in life to learn these arts that are so easily forgotten in our consumer culture, and to pass on the joy of creating to my own children.
On the photography side of things, I am very much an amateur, but a very eager one. For the gear junkies, I shoot with a Canon 7D and an assortment of lenses and accessories. I have completed a certificate in Photography from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, and I’m also a junkie for workshops, seminars and photowalks. I love taking pictures of my children, but I really have the most fun shooting macro, especially household objects, and also low-light long exposures. I want to improve my skills in the area of food photography the most, and I hope having a blog where I regularly post recipes will help with that!
If you like what you see, please say hi – you can find me on Twitter, Facebook, or send me an email too! There are links to the right for all the ways you can find me. It’s a bit lonely just throwing myself out there for the internet to see, so I would appreciate any comments, critique or other discussion if you have something to say. And I’m always looking for new blogs to read, so if you are also a blogger, link me up!
